Definition: Salicylate / Salicylic acid

Please note: I am not a doctor and have no medical knowledge whatsoever. Anything you find on this website is merely as a result of my own experiences. If you suspect you are suffering from any condition mentioned here please consult a trained medical practitioner.

Salycylic Acid - derived from the latin word for Willow Tree - SALIX - from which it can be extracted. It occurs naturally and is present in manyother plants.

Salicylate - Any of several widely prescribed drugs derived from salicylic acid. Salicylates exert analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory actions. The most important is acetylsalicylic acid, or aspirin. Known for its abilities to ease pain and fever.

NSAID - Non Steroidal Anti Inflamatory Drug - Aspirin, Ibuprofen and many other pain killers

My Experience

BAD experience with this. I've had reactions to Bruffen prescribed for a back injury. Voltarol also administered for a back injury. Be very careful of hospital staff. On both of these occasions I told the doctors I was allergic to NSAIDs and I was still given these drugs. The voltarol injection resulted in abdominal pain, nausea and congestion. It lasted a few hours.

One small Bruffen tablet resulted in severe abdominal pain, nausea, uncontrollable torrents running from my nose, shortness of breath and worst of all loss of vision as the blood vessels in my eyeballs had swollen up. My eyeballs were red when they should have been white and I couldnt see anything other than a light greyness.

Not much fun sitting in a wheelchair in a line in the emergency room wearing an oxygen mask with a streaming nose and unable to see whilst listening to the police fighting with drunks and vice versa.
